Victor Chab (1930–2024) / 1969 / Surrealist Composition / Hst
Artist: Victor Chab (1930-2024)
A powerful oil on canvas by Argentine artist Victor Chab (1930–2024), dated 1969.
Straddling the line between lyrical abstraction and an organic surrealism inherited from the great masters of the 20th century, the composition features a mysterious biomorphic silhouette.
Evoking a hybrid creature or a totemic figure, it engages in a subtle dialogue with a bright red celestial body suspended in the upper portion. The primary strength of this painting lies in its exceptional artistic execution.
Here, Victor Chab displays a remarkable mastery of impasto and textural effects. The white and ivory paint, worked into an architectural relief, beautifully catches the light and lends a three-dimensional quality to the work.
The sinuous contours contrast with the depth and texture of a particularly vibrant midnight blue background.
Signed on the back by the artist and dated "69"
Dimensions without frame: 40 x 30 cm
Dimensions with frame: 59 x 47 cm
Victor Chab (1930–2024) is a major and indispensable figure of the avant-garde and Surrealism in Latin America. Born in Buenos Aires to immigrant parents, he began his artistic training at a very young age by attending various open studios, before developing a deeply original and rigorous self-taught style.
As early as the 1950s, Chab made a name for himself on the art scene. In 1957, he became one of the co-founders of the historic group “Siete pintores abstractos” (Seven Abstract Painters), a collective that challenged the academic conventions of the time. His work then rapidly evolved toward a poetic surrealism and an exploration of psychic automatism. Breaking free from traditional figuration, he created a universe populated by organic forms, fantastical creatures, and complex biomorphic structures, often enhanced by meticulous work on texture and material.
Throughout his prolific career, Victor Chab received numerous prestigious awards, including the Art Critics’ Prize (1986) and the renowned Konex Prize on two occasions (1992 and 2002), cementing his status as a master of Argentine painting. Internationally recognized, he has represented his country at major events, notably at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1964.
His works have been exhibited in the world’s leading art capitals (Paris, New York, Washington, Tel Aviv, Caracas) and today enrich the collections of numerous modern art museums around the world as well as important private collections. This 1969 work is a rare and historic testament to his artistic maturity.
