Imposing Art Deco Craquelé Seagull in Flight
Attributed to Charles Lemanceau, 1930
We are offering this significant Art Deco-era animal sculpture, circa 1930, crafted from crackled earthenware with an indelible mark. It depicts a seagull with striking realism and movement, captured in mid-flight above the crest of a wave.
Typical of the rationalist and aerodynamic aesthetic of the 1930s, this piece stands out for the fluidity of its lines and the purity of its monochrome cream glaze
The contrasting textured black finish on the beak and the band around the wings emphasizes the modernity of the composition.
With its remarkable wingspan of 64 cm, this model is a direct tribute to the modernist sculptor Charles Lemanceau
Fine earthenware with a crackled glaze.
Period: Circa 1930.
Maximum span: 64 cm
Height: 34 cm
Base dimensions: 35 cm × 12 cm
Markings: Recessed studio mark beneath the base, obscured by the glaze
The sculpture is in very good overall condition, with no restoration. The glaze features a beautiful, uniform network of crackles
Please note, in the interest of complete transparency, there is a small, old, superficial chip in the glaze at the tip of the upper wing—a detail photographed here that is inherent to the handling of these pieces
which in no way alters the overall silhouette
Price: 180 euros, excluding shipping costs
