Art Nouveau Lamp Made Of Carved, Openwork Wood – Circa 1920

A high-quality decorative lamp, ideal for an Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, or eclectic interior.

A remarkable Art Nouveau-style table lamp, made around 1920, featuring a large cylindrical wooden base entirely carved with openwork.

The piece features a rich naturalistic design in which vegetation seems to envelop the entire composition. Branches, flowers, foliage, and vines intertwine in a continuous flow, serving as a backdrop for a veritable miniature animal scene. Several birds, as well as small rodents moving among the plants, bring the sculpture to life and lend the work an almost narrative quality, evoking a living natural world observed with poetic sensibility.

This approach, which could be likened to a decorative bestiary, constitutes one of the major themes of Art Nouveau. Here, the animal is no longer a mere ornament but plays a full part in the composition, in a constant dialogue with the plant world. This organic vision, rooted in late 19th-century artistic explorations, finds a particularly refined interpretation here.

The openwork is of exquisite quality and allows light to pass through the sculptures, accentuating their relief and depth. Each side reveals a new composition, inviting the eye to explore the lamp from every angle.

The molded quadrangular base is topped with a brass pedestal. The vintage electrical system is equipped with a brass socket featuring two independently controlled lights. The more recent beige silk shade diffuses a warm light that beautifully highlights the richness of the carving.

A striking decorative piece, as captivating when unlit as when lit, ideal for Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, or eclectic interiors.
