Famille Romani Dans Une Clairière - Oil On Panel, 19th Century
Charming genre scene depicting a Romani family settled in a forest clearing.
In the center of the composition, a mother holding her child is surrounded by several figures arranged in an undergrowth bathed in soft light. A large drum in the foreground and various personal effects evoke the itinerant life of this community. The standing young woman brings an elegant presence to the ensemble, while the treatment of light subtly enlivens the scene.
The artist favors an intimate, poetic atmosphere here, playing on the contrasts between the deep shadows of the forest and the flashes of light that reveal the figures. The reds, greens and ochres create a warm and particularly decorative palette.
This work is in the tradition of European genre scenes of the late 19th century, a period during which subjects inspired by Romani and Bohemian populations enjoyed great success with academic and naturalistic painters.
Presented in a beautiful antique frame in richly carved wood and gilded stucco.
