Fürstenberg Porcelain Coffee Pot With Neoclassical Landscapes, C.1780-1790

A fine late eighteenth-century porcelain coffee pot produced by the ducal Fürstenberg Porcelain Factory in Brunswick, Germany, circa 1780-1790. Its elegant cylindrical body, angular strap handle, ribbed spout and domed cover represent the refined neoclassical "Zylindrische Form A" created by the factory's chief modeller Johann Heinrich Jaks.                                              The porcelain is decorated with Fürstenberg's distinctive pale yellow ground, reserved with finely hand-painted landscapes depicting classical ruins, winding rivers, country paths and rustic figures. The white porcelain neck, faceted handle and spout are enriched with original gilt decoration, while a delicately tooled floral and scroll border encircles the shoulder.                             The matching cover carries corresponding landscape panels and is surmounted by a finely modelled gilded pinecone finial with its original pierced steam vent. The underside retains traces of a worn blue factory mark together with impressed numerals and model numbers. Established in 1747 under the patronage of Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Fürstenberg quickly gained an international reputation for the quality of its porcelain and the elegance of its neoclassical tablewares. Coffee pots of this period are increasingly difficult to find, particularly with their original cover and such well-preserved painted decoration.
