A student of Camille Flers, Louis-Nicolas Cabat made his debut at the 1833 Salon. A member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institut de France in 1867 and served as director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1879 to 1884.
