The daughter of Aline and Loul Combres, Sophie Combres grew up immersed in traditions and a deep reverence for the Earth. After spending years in her father’s studio, she studied at the Beaux-Arts in Nîmes.
In 1980, she spent several months in La Borne at the studio of Jean Linard. Her travels in Africa revealed to her the secrets of pottery using polished clay.
Since 1990, she has also expressed herself through painting, decorating her egg-shaped vases. The originality of her artistic approach lies in making full use of the entire surface to bring the pictorial design to life with vitality and energy. Her graphic style is perfectly suited to the shape of her vases and pots.
As she rotates the piece like a film reel, the illustrated story comes to life, just like in the movies. The design unfolds with grace and lightness, reflecting the artist’s talent both in her mastery of the potter’s craft and in her creativity as a painter.
Nothing is left to chance: applied with engobes, the subtly chosen polychrome colors complement the choreography of this “3D painting.”
