Large Louis XV Display Case With Curved Glass, Marquetry, And Gilded Bronze In The Style Of François Linke, Paris

Louis XV-style living room display cabinet, Parisian craftsmanship from the Belle Époque, circa 1890–1910

A substantial display cabinet made of wood veneer and floral marquetry on an oak frame, featuring two glass-paned doors; the front and sides are curved, and the entire piece is enhanced by rich Rocaille-style bronze ornamentation. The dynamic curves of the silhouette, the lively lines of the frames, the elegance of the foliage motifs, and the openwork crown place this piece firmly within the great Parisian decorative tradition of the late 19th century, when Louis XV styles regained popularity in refined interiors during the Belle Époque.

The composition, with its beautiful scale, captivates with the balance of its proportions and the decorative quality of its inlaid panels, enlivened by floral motifs with a supple and graceful design. The bronze accents, abundant yet unobtrusive, complement the piece’s overall flow and highlight the sinuous lines of the front. The piece as a whole exudes that restrained opulence and tasteful luxury characteristic of Parisian creations intended for grand reception apartments and private mansions.

The oak frame attests to solid and durable craftsmanship, clad in a warm-toned veneer that time has beautifully weathered. This beautiful antique patina, combined with the still-distinct presence of the bronze fittings and the charm of the curved glass panels, lends the piece a truly stately presence. The display case still has its key; the lock is in working order. For the sake of accuracy, it should be noted that the right-side glass panel has been replaced with transparent acrylic. There are also small cracks on either side of the marquetry, as well as the usual signs of wear and age consistent with the piece’s age and intended use.
