Jacques Callot After Matteo Rosselli, Incoronazione Di Cristina Di Lorena, Early Engraving By
Jacques Callot after Matteo Rosselli, Incoronazione di Cristina di Lorena, antique engraving from the suite of the Life of Ferdinand I de' Medici, 17th century, former Bouisset Montauban collection
Beautiful antique engraving depicting the coronation of Christine de Lorraine, wife of Ferdinand I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, at the heart of a vast court scene of great pageantry. The composition unfolds a solemn ceremony under a canopy, bringing together sovereigns, prelates, gentlemen, guards and horses, in an architecture of power wholly characteristic of Medici culture.
The center of the image is occupied by the gesture of the coronation, around which the entire space is ordered. The future sovereign bows gracefully, while the court crowd composes a scene that is at once historical, theatrical and deeply decorative. The subject refers to the Incoronazione di Cristina di Lorena and is part of the engraved cycle dedicated to the life of Ferdinand I de' Medici.
