Louis XV Bench, Upholstered, Carved Wood; Large Napoleon III Stool; Interior Decor
Louis XV-style bench, late 19th–early 20th century
Small Louis XV-style bench made of molded, carved wood finished in off-white lacquer; high-quality French craftsmanship.
The seat stands out for its unusual proportions: wider and deeper than a simple footrest, yet lower and more compact than a traditional bench. This intermediate size gives it a unique decorative appeal; it can be used as an occasional bench, a footstool, a living room seat, or a large stool.
The frame reflects the Louis XV style: a scalloped molding, curved feet with scrollwork, carved rocaille motifs at the corners and center, stylized foliage, and flowing lines. The off-white lacquer, weathered over time, reveals the underlying wood in places, which accentuates the relief of the carvings.
The seat is upholstered in thick red velvet with an embossed pattern. The fabric has a rich depth of color, ranging from burgundy to garnet red, with a subtle pattern created by the velvet’s texture. It shows signs of wear in places, with a few visible marks and small snags, but retains a strong decorative presence. The edge is accented by a row of patinated brass upholstery tacks.
Firm seat, well-strapped. Stable frame. Condition: signs of use, scuffs, chips, and missing white lacquer; small cracks and visible repairs on the backrest and corners. Thick red velvet worn in places. See photographs.
