Napoleon III-style Butter Dish With Lid, Made Of Silver-plated Metal
A striking silver-plated butter set from the Napoleon III period, consisting of a large serving plate, a small glass dish for holding the butter, and a silver-plated cover whose finial is a small silver-plated bronze cow.
The intricate, carefully chiseled arabesque decoration curiously evokes the Orient, yet the interior mounting of the finial is distinctly 19th-century European.
No hallmarks were found, though the quality of craftsmanship suggests Cristofle or a similar firm.
Perhaps a trial piece that was not selected, given the way it was executed.
Excellent original condition.
Diameter of the glass dish: 12 cm
