Carved, Polychrome, And Gilded Wooden Reliquary Bust Of A Saint, 18th Century
A rare reliquary bust depicting a young saint, carved from polychrome and gilded wood, dating from the 18th century. This religious sculpture captivates with the delicacy of its face, the elegance of its curly hair, and the quality of its drapery, enhanced by gold leaf gilding that is still largely intact.
The chest features a large oval cavity designed to hold a relic, in accordance with the liturgical use of reliquary busts displayed on altars or carried in processions. The back is closed by an original panel, attesting to its original design.
The piece as a whole features beautiful original polychromy, rich gilding, and an authentic patina. Some wear, minor losses, shrinkage cracks in the wood, and routine restorations are visible, all of which are entirely consistent with its age and centuries of use.
