Petrified Fossil Crab From The Pliocene, Java Island, Indonesia
Rare, large, petrified fossil crab, Charybdis aff. sp.
Pliocene, Java Island (Indonesia) (–5.3 to –2.6 million years ago) From the Bodjong Formation.
Dimensions:
Wingspan with legs: 18 x 15 cm
Carapace alone: 10 x 7.5 cm
Claw alone: 9 cm long.
A beautiful, rare collector’s specimen.
Indeed, fossils from Indonesia are rarely studied and seldom found on the market.
Preservation and Fossilization
The preservation of such crustaceans was made possible by the rapid burial of the animal, likely following a slump or underwater landslide.
Petrification results from the percolation of calcareous elements through the carapace via water heavily laden with minerals, gradually replacing the chitin components of the carapace with rock. This is the principle of fossilization.
