Francesco Battaglioli is one of the leading figures in the tradition of architectural capriccio painting in eighteenth-century Venice. Trained in Modena, where he worked as a theatrical set designer, he moved to Venice around the mid-century, engaging with the fantasy vedutism associated with Giovanni Antonio Canal and Michele Marieschi. His work is distinguished by a rigorous perspectival construction, inherited from his scenic training, and by a diffuse, silvery light that moves across the architecture with restrained touch.
The present painting offers a composition typical of his mature period: a Roman triumphal arch in the foreground to the right opens onto a landscape background featuring a medieval tower, scattered ruins, and a river stretching into the distance. Figures in eighteenth-century dress, distributed naturally along the visual path, rimandano to the macchiette of the Canaletto tradition, rendered with quick and confident brushwork. The treatment of the sky, with the central cloud dissolving into pale blue, and the perspectival construction of the arch find close stylistic comparison with documented works by Battaglioli. The previous attribution to Michele Marieschi, attested by the label on the reverse, is understandable given the shared subject matter and setting, but the painterly handling, softer and more atmospheric than Marieschi's more incisive touch, points with confidence to Francesco Battaglioli.
