Important Bronze Sculpture, “au Clair De La Lune,” Signed Bouret – Late 19th Century
This charming bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicts Pierrot as a musician, captured in a moment of life and lightheartedness. The figure, leaning slightly forward, holds his mandolin close as he sings the famous melody Au clair de la lune, the title of which is inscribed on the terrace. His expressive face—with his mouth slightly parted and his eyebrows raised—conveys all the gentle melancholy associated with this iconic figure of popular theater.
Pierrot’s traditional costume, with its wide ruff, baggy pants, and soft hat, is rendered with great finesse of form. A particularly captivating and charismatic piece, the sculpture bears the signature Boureton the pedestal, confirming its attribution to Eutrope Bouret (1833–1906), a sculptor renowned for his poetic and sentimental figures of the late 19th century.
This bronze perfectly illustrates the Belle Époque’s taste for graceful and theatrical subjects. It fits equally well in a collection of decorative bronzes or in an interior seeking a touch of poetry and nostalgia.
