Light Cavalry Officer's Knapsack—polish (by Michel Petar; See Volume Iv, 1804–1815)

Artist: Premier Empire
Bordeaux morocco leather strap, trimmed with a silver braid featuring four Bordeaux silk stripes and five silver-plated and gold-plated brass accents; silver buckle and escutcheon with gilded half-spiderweb appliqués, a silver octagonal medallion with a gilded lion’s head appliqué; a silver escutcheon with a framing border and a central imperial eagle motif, both applied and gilded; double pin with a chain.
A very elegant wooden box covered in scarlet morocco leather and lined with brown-black velvet, its lid, featuring a very pronounced scalloped edge, is adorned with an eagle with widely spread wings and the golden crown of the city of Paris, framed by a gilded brass band.
We see a morphological resemblance to the emblematic eagle of Poland, hence the likely attribution of this object to an officer of the Polish Light Cavalry. The sides of the box, shaped like sabers, are made of gilded metal. Note on the back the strap, whose sole purpose is to secure the hussar’s cap to the box.
Broken strap used to close the cartridge pouch.
In good to very good condition, considering the age of the object.
France. First Empire.
