Although destined for a career in commerce, Camoin nevertheless took drawing classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille beginning in 1895. The following year, he received first prize in figure drawing, which convinced him to pursue this path. In 1895, he lived with his mother on Boulevard de Clichy in Paris.
Often described as a “Mediterranean Fauve,” Charles Camoin (1879–1965) became part of the international avant-garde circle through his connections to Paris and the Montmartre bohemian scene. He would go on to become one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
