AUCOC PARIS
Here is one of the oldest firms on Rue de la Paix. As early as 1835, Casimir Aucoc the Elder, a Royal Warrant holder, established at 154 Rue Saint-Honoré, where he primarily crafted dressing cases, moved to 6 Rue de la Paix and added goldsmithing to his specialty. In turn,Louis Aucoc the Elder succeeded him in 1854 (Louis Aucoc, known as the Elder, Goldsmith and Tablet Maker in Paris, 6 Rue de la Paix) and later added jewelry to his production.
André Aucoc, the third of this generation, deeply enamored with the 18th century, directed his designs towards the recreation of the great masters of the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon I.
Sometimes based on engravings by Bérain, Lepautre, Ballin, Meissonnier, Germain, Roettiers, Odiot, and Thomire, sometimes on originals from his magnificent private collection, and sometimes on drawings executed in his workshops and directly inspired by the Masters, he produced, between 1884 and 1911, tureens, covered dishes, candelabra, centerpieces, and toilet services whose impeccable execution can replace, even in the eyes of connoisseurs, antique pieces that have become virtually impossible to find since the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of gold and silver tableware ordered by Louis XIV in 1688 and the patriotic meltings of the Revolution.
Moreover—and this is a rare merit—all these reconstructions, these stylistic compositions, possess a distinctive character. They don’t feel like a copy or a pastiche, perhaps because André Aucoc never abandoned the hammer for the more expeditious processes of casting and stamping, much less for the processes themselves
