Antique Japanese Bijin Porcelain Figurine With Fan, Rare Blue Underglaze Decoration,

A charming antique Japanese porcelain figure depicting a young bijin (beautiful woman) holding an uchiwa fan, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912).

The figure is finely modelled standing in an elegant pose, her head tilted upwards with a serene and contemplative expression. She wears a beautifully decorated kimono adorned with vibrant maple leaves in iron-red and green enamels over an unusual underglaze cobalt blue ground of scrolling cloud and arabesque motifs. The broad geometric collar border and carefully painted details are characteristic of high-quality Meiji-period decorative porcelain.

Particularly noteworthy is the use of underglaze blue decoration beneath the enamel colours, a technique more commonly associated with better-quality Kutani and Kutani-influenced wares of the late nineteenth century. The figure carries a finely painted fan and retains excellent decorative appeal from all angles.
