Set of three engravings, “Costume Parisien,” 1797
Journal des Dames et des Modes – First year of publication.
A rare set of three original engravings, delicately hand-colored, from the first year of publication (1797) of the *Journal des Dames et des Modes*, considered one of the world’s very first illustrated fashion magazines.
Published at the beginning of the Directoire, these plates are among the earliest and most refined examples of post-Revolutionary French fashion. Two of them are dated 1797, confirming that they belong to the inaugural year, which is particularly sought after.
The female figures depicted—in light dresses, gauze capes, and Greek-style hairstyles—accurately illustrate the new elegance of a society in the process of rebuilding itself. The period color scheme, remarkably fresh, highlights the quality of the craftsmanship and the rarity of the set. The Directoire-era plates are, in fact, significantly less common than those from the Empire period.
Mounted in three gilded wooden frames, in perfect condition, free of damage, and ready to hang.
