Alfredo Ramos Martinez : "youg Woman With A Feathered Hat"
AlfredoRamos Martinez (1871–1946): “Young Woman with a Feathered Hat,” pastel, 71 × 54 cm, remounted in a “sandwich” style with backing paper and pH-neutral cardboard usingtournettes in its original frame (restored by Maïtena in Hasparren), 94 ×75 cm.
I know, it’s enough to surprise anyone when you decipher the signature andsee what it corresponds to…And yet, this charming pastel is indeed the work of Ramos Martinez, who, beforebecoming “the father of Mexican Modernism”—and whose “children,” so to speak, included Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Alfredo Siqueiros were, in a sense, his protégés, received a classical education andworked in that style in Los Angeles and especially in Paris, where heundoubtedly created this work.
I was lucky enough to find it in its “attic-found” condition, very dirty onon the inside of the glass and with a damaged frame; now, thanks to a museum-qualityrestoration by the Christian Olive studio, I can present it properly, aside from the reflections on the glass!
This vivacious young woman wearing a feathered hat from which a few curlsescape to catch the eye, with a devastating smile and a bodice adorned with a peony, demonstrates the mastery of her artist, who painted this portrait in 1911.
