Great Wakizashi-small Katana Tsuba Rare Tate-ito-gata Shape, Christian Cross, Edo Period, Japan

A very interesting tsuba. Made of wrought iron, its outer shape is known as "Tashi," while the inner shape is the rather rare "Tate-ito-gata," literally meaning "Christian cross." In fact, it was likely crafted for a samurai who had converted to Christianity. The “Nagako-ana” (blade slot) is fitted with a “Sekigane,” a copper wedge designed to accommodate and secure the new blade. It features a slot for both a kozuka and a kogai on each side, and is of fine forging quality, with a pleasant ringing sound when tapped with a finger. Given its size, this tsuba was designed for a wakizashi, or perhaps a small katana.
Good condition, with a very slight trace of oxidation on an inner edge—nothing serious. Please take a close look at my detailed photos; I’m not hiding anything!
Japanese craftsmanship, Edo period, most likely dating from the late 17th century, circa 1650–1700.
Dimensions: 7.5 x 7 x 0.4 cm
Nagako-ana: 3 cm x 1 cm
