System Umbrella For Horse Racing Enthusiasts, Circa 1900, Made Of Amourette Wood, With An Eagle-shaped Knob
An umbrella from the 1900s, featuring an ingenious design intended for horse racing enthusiasts: a pencil concealed in the knob allow edits owner to quickly jot down his bets during horse races.
The knob is made of gilded metal and depicts an eagle’s head with ruby eyes.The top of the pencil is adorned with an emerald and a ring that allows it to be removed from its compartment.
The barrel is made of two types of precious wood: rosewood near the knob and another type of figured wood on the upper section.
The band is engraved with the name “Betaille,” 20 rue Royale, Paris. Betaille was a prestigious dealer in luxury umbrellas in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The name “Betaille” is also engraved on the shaft.
The green canopy was replaced at a later date.
