Important Renaissance-style drop-leaf desk, 19th century

Dimensions:

Height: 195 cm
Width: 160 cm
Depth: 56 cm

Spectacular, richly carved walnut drop-leaf secretary desk, inspired by French and Italian Renaissance furniture.

This monumental piece stands out for the abundance and quality of its high-relief carved decoration.

The upper section features an imposing dentil entablature surmounting a front panel adorned with foliage scrolls and mascarons.

The drop-leaf is decorated with a remarkable carved panel depicting a mythological or Bacchic scene animated by putti and ancient figures.

On either side, two female figures carved as caryatids support the cabinet’s structure.

When opened, the flap reveals a spacious writing desk adorned with a decorative wrought-iron railing.

The lower section opens via two doors carved with pastoral and mythological scenes in relief.

It is flanked by two male Atlantean figures carved in the round, symbolically supporting the entire structure.

The meticulous execution of the carvings, the rich iconography, and the generous proportions attest to a high-quality piece intended for bourgeois or aristocratic interiors of the late 19th century.
