Sarpedon Drawing His Bow, Bronze By Henri Peinte—19th Century
An imposing bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting Sarpedon, son of Zeus and a Lycian hero of the Trojan War, in the pose of a warrior drawing his bow, with a quiver at his feet. A major work by Henri Peinte (1845–1912), a French academic sculptor and student of Duret and Cavelier, who won an award at the 1877 Salon for this very subject and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1889.
Signed “H. Peinte” in intaglio on the naturalistic pedestal. Beautiful cast with a very fine patina.
