Italian School, circa 1760–1780
Ink, graphite and watercolor on laid paper with watermark
Sheet: 49.5 × 36 cm
Framed: 76 × 54 cm

Paper bearing the watermark of the Cornelis & Jacob Honig paper mill, Zaandyk (Holland), associated with the Jean Villedary model, documented between 1736 and 1812.
Before one even decides whether this represents a theatre, a palace, or an architectural scheme never intended to be built, the drawing impresses through its almost boundless ambition. Columns rise upon columns, arches open within arches, terraces are populated by statues, and obelisks seem to extend the structure beyond the very edges of the sheet.
In the eighteenth century, architects did not merely design buildings. They designed wonder. This drawing belongs to that world, where a façade could become a spectacle and architecture itself could aspire to the grandeur of a monument.
The elevation occupies nearly the entire sheet with a complex and highly ambitious composition arranged on several levels, while a carefully drawn ground plan appears below. The presence of both plan and elevation suggests work produced within a professional environment, whether as a design study, an advanced academic exercise, or a preparatory model for a celebratory or architectural project.
The overall conception recalls the culture of the Galli Bibiena family, the celebrated dynasty of architects and designers who transformed the language of monumental perspective throughout Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The superimposed architectural orders, statuary-lined balustrades, dramatic depth and powerful vertical emphasis all belong to this artistic milieu.
Particularly noteworthy is the paper itself. The drawing is executed on a high-quality Dutch laid paper produced by the renowned Cornelis & Jacob Honig mill at Zaandyk, one of the most respected paper manufacturers in eighteenth-century Europe and a supplier frequently encountered in architectural drawings, design projects and academic works of distinction. The watermark provides strong material evidence supporting the proposed eighteenth-century dating.
