Vintage Chalice With Christogram And Silver Cup. Possibly Spain, 1970s
Vintage chalice, possibly Spanish and datable to the 1970s, with a very characteristic aesthetic of modern liturgical silverwork from that period. It presents a sober and geometric design, with stepped polygonal base, faceted stem and a wide cup with a clean profile. It is a simple piece, but with a very recognizable and quite decorative appearance within its austerity.
The cup is the only part made in silver, acid tested due to the absence of visible hallmarks, and is gilded both inside and outside. It carries a very discreet incised decoration, resolved with simple lines and without further ornamentation. The rest of the chalice, meaning the base and stem, is made in silvered and gilded metal. The knop incorporates a yellow decorative element, probably made of synthetic material, which fits well with the design and with the liturgical production of the period.
One of the most interesting details appears on the base, where there is a Christian emblem that most probably represents a Christogram or monogram of Christ, accompanied by alpha and omega in a highly stylized version. It does not appear to be a purely ornamental motif, but rather a Eucharistic and Christological symbol fully coherent with the liturgical use of the piece.
As for the condition, it preserves a good general appearance, with normal signs of use and age, but without losing its appeal. It is an interesting chalice for anyone looking for a vintage liturgical piece, different from more classical or overloaded models. It may fit well both in a sacred art collection and for dignified liturgical use or as a priestly gift.
Measurements: Height 20.8 cm (8.19 in). Diameter of the cup 10.7 cm (4.21 in). Diameter of the base 12.2 cm (4.80 in). Weight: 405 g. (14.29 oz.)
