Antique Gilt Brass Monstrance. Spain, Circa 1950. Complete
Elegant antique altar monstrance entirely crafted in gilt brass, probably made in Spain around 1950, complete with its original luna or lunette for 6.5 cm hosts (2.56 in). This is a piece with a strong visual presence, executed following traditional liturgical models with a balanced composition and sober yet highly effective ornamentation. The ensemble retains a luminous and solemn appearance, enhanced by the contrast between the bright gilt brass and the dark silvered metal details decorating the central display and the base.
The monstrance features the classic radial structure with numerous lance-shaped rays of different lengths creating a highly attractive Eucharistic sunburst effect. At the center is the circular display with glass and complete lunette, designed to hold hosts up to 6.5 cm in diameter. Surrounding the lunette are the symbolic figures of the Four Evangelists: the angel of Saint Matthew, the lion of Saint Mark, the ox of Saint Luke and the eagle of Saint John. These figures add relief, depth and iconographic richness to the piece, while also creating a beautiful chromatic contrast with the gilded finish of the rays. Above the ensemble rises a stylized Latin cross that vertically crowns the composition.
The shaft is smooth and elegant, with a central spherical knop that facilitates handling and visually balances the design. The circular base stands out for its embossed vegetal decoration composed of leaves and symmetrical classical-inspired motifs executed with considerable detail. The feet also display carefully worked decorative elements and maintain the ornamental coherence of the whole. The gilding retains a very good overall appearance, with slight normal signs of use and age visible in some specific areas, without affecting the aesthetics or integrity of the monstrance.
The luna or lunette retains its glass and opening mechanism. The ensemble appears complete and functional, preserving all its main elements well assembled. The piece conveys that mixture of solemnity and elegance characteristic of mid-20th century religious metalwork, with an aesthetic still closely linked to earlier historicist models.
A monstrance of important size, highly decorative and with excellent visual presence, ideal both for liturgical use and for a collection of antique religious silverwork. It would be perfect to reintroduce into the Church and use in a parish thanks to its good condition and the fact that it retains the complete lunette.
Its attractive radial design makes this monstrance a very striking piece even from a distance. The rich combination of bright gilding, vegetal reliefs and symbols of the Evangelists provides depth and visual personality. Furthermore, the fact that it retains the complete original luna considerably increases its interest for collectors and real liturgical use.
Measurements: Height: 61 cm (24 in). Width across the rays: 31 cm (12.2 in). Base: 12 cm (4.72 in). Lunette for 6.5 cm hosts (2.56 in).
