Antique Spanish Solid Silver Chalice With Gilt Cup. Spain, C. 1800
Antique Spanish chalice entirely made of solid silver, tentatively dated between the late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. It is a piece with very sober lines, elegant in design and especially attractive for the purity of its form. At first sight it conveys a serene beauty. It presents a construction based on turned and assembled elements, with a circular foot of good diameter, moulded profile and balanced proportions. The stem follows the same sober and well-executed design, with a pronounced central knop and mouldings that provide visual rhythm without overloading the piece. The cup maintains a clean and elegant shape, with a gilt silver interior. This gilded interior adds warmth to the whole piece and further enhances its presence.
One of the most interesting aspects of this chalice is precisely its austerity. It does not rely on reliefs, complex chasing or exuberant decoration to appear attractive. Its appeal lies in the quality of the metal, the harmonious balance between its different parts and that restrained elegance so characteristic of certain period Spanish liturgical pieces. It has a very clean, serious and at the same time highly decorative appearance, making it suitable both from a devotional point of view and for a specialised collection.
No visible hallmarks can be seen, although the piece has been acid tested as solid silver. Regarding its condition, it remains in very good overall condition. The only detail to mention is the cup, where some deformations caused by age and use can be seen in the photographs. These do not prevent its use and the piece remains perfectly functional.
This is a very interesting chalice for anyone looking for an antique religious piece with a restrained aesthetic and without excessive ornamentation. The white silver exterior and the gilt cup create a very beautiful and impressive ensemble. Furthermore, its size and weight make it a comfortable, serious and convincing example. It is an antique and elegant piece with a classic liturgical appearance that preserves the special charm of well-made religious objects designed to last.
Measurements: height 21.2 cm (8.35 in), cup diameter 7 cm (2.76 in), base diameter 12 cm (4.72 in). Weight: 386 g. (13.62 oz.)
