Antique 18k Gold Rosary With Natural Coral Beads. Spain, C. 1900
Beautiful antique rosary probably of Spanish origin, made of 18K gold and natural coral beads, datable between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It is a devotional piece of great presence, intended for a person of deep religious sensitivity who values not only the material beauty of gold and coral, but also the spiritual strength of an antique, noble and very special object of prayer.
The rosary preserves its gold crucifix with the image of Christ crucified in relief and the upper cartouche with the inscription INRI. The natural coral beads present that very attractive intense red tone, with slight irregularities typical of the material, which adds authenticity, warmth and character to the piece. The chain and the links are also made of 18K gold, creating a set of great material and visual value.
One of the most beautiful elements is the central medallion, richly worked and topped by a Spanish-type royal crown, very close to the models used in Spain during the time of Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII. On the front appears the image of the Immaculate Virgin together with the monogram of Mary, a very appropriate detail for a piece of deep Marian devotion. On the back is the anagram of Jesus, IHS, accompanied by a cross, reinforcing the Christological meaning of the set.
The state of conservation is very good. The rosary is complete, maintains a magnificent overall presence and preserves the charm typical of well-cared-for antique religious jewels. No visible hallmarks are appreciated, although the piece has been checked by means of a gold test and has tested positive for 18K gold. The coral beads show slight natural irregularities that reinforce their authenticity, while the gold preserves a warm and luminous appearance in the crucifix, the chain, the links and the central medallion. With a total weight of 35 g, it is also a piece with an important material presence. As a guideline, it can be estimated at approximately around 25 g of 18K gold.
More than a simple antique rosary, it is a devotional jewel of great presence, made of 18K gold and natural coral, intended to accompany prayer and remain in a family or community for many years. Its crowned Marian center, the image of Christ crucified, the richness of the goldwork and the intensity of the coral give it a very special spiritual and visual strength. It is an ideal piece for a person deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary, for a priest, for a religious community or as a religious gift of great meaning, one of those that are not only used, but kept and passed down from generation to generation.
