Puiforcat – Solid Silver Chocolate Pot – Circa Late 19th Century
The decoration is concentratedprimarily around the spout, adorned with a spectacular mascarondepicting the head of a bearded faun, rendered in high relief and framed byrich foliage scrollwork. This sculptural ornamentation lendsthe piece its full decorative impact and evokes the Regency style’s penchant forasymmetrical compositions and motifs inspired by nature.
The molded lid isencircled by a frieze of stylized leaves and topped with a handle in the shape ofa fleur-de-lis. The side handle, made of turned and twisted blackened wood and mounted onsilver ferrules, ensures an excellent grip while providing an elegant contrastto the metal’s brilliance.
Through the quality of itscraftsmanship, the balance of its proportions, and the delicacy of its decoration, thischocolate pot attests to Puiforcat’s expertise inreinterpreting the great French styles of the late 19th century.
