Educational Botanical Model “lilium” By Robert Brendel – Germany – Circa 1900
Rare and highly decorative, this botanical model depicting a Lilium (lily) was created around 1900 by the renowned German manufacturer Robert Brendel. Originally designed for teaching in universities, botanical institutes, and schools, Brendel models are now appreciated for their remarkable craftsmanship and striking sculptural presence.
Identified as Model No. 75, this specimen faithfully illustrates the anatomy of a lily in full bloom. Its elegantly curved petals, accented with delicate red highlights, surround stamens and a pistil reproduced with great botanical precision. Hand-painted in naturalistic tones, it delicately captures all the elegance and structural complexity of the species.
Made of wood and papier-mâché, the model is mounted on its original painted stem and turned base. The original printed identification label, preserved beneath the base, as well as the label bearing the model number on the stem, reinforce its authenticity and attest to its educational provenance.
Originally intended for science education, Brendel models are now highly sought after by collectors of scientific instruments, natural history objects, and decorative arts, who are drawn to this unique combination of scientific rigor, exceptional craftsmanship, and refined aesthetics.
