Red, round, bearded, stern or funny, the Daruma is a symbol of Japan all on its own.
The Daruma is a figurative representation of Bodhidharma, a 6th-century Indian monk who came to China to spread the teachings of Buddhism.
Known for his perseverance, as legend has it that he remained in meditation in a cave in the Zazen position for 9 years, thereby losing the use of his arms and legs. Thus, the figurines representing him are ovoid in shape.
The Japanese adore this figure, and over the centuries, artists have continued to depict Daruma, an icon of Zen Buddhism.
