Set Of Six Saint Clément Majolica Fruit Dessert Plates, Circa 1900
Artist: Saint Clément
This charming set of six dessert plates, made of earthenware from Saint-Clément in Lorraine, dates from around 1900. Each plate is decorated with a different fruit motif—cherries, peaches, apricots, grapes, lemons, and plums—in bright, natural colors, created using the slip (majolica) technique in high relief.
Founded in the 18th century in the village of Saint-Clément, near Lunéville, in northeastern France, the Saint-Clément earthenware factory became one of the most prestigious ceramic manufacturers of the late 19th century. It gained particular renown during the Art Nouveau period for its richly modeled fruit, flower, and nature motifs. Pieces from this era were often hand-painted and designed to bring the beauty of the garden directly to the table.
The printed and painted decoration on these plates attests to the high quality of Saint-Clément’s production at the turn of the 20th century. The slightly textured backgrounds, delicate foliage, and sculpted fruits create a striking three-dimensional effect, characteristic of French earthenware from this period.
Both decorative and functional, this set will beautifully complement a collection of earthenware, majolica, or Art Nouveau ceramics. Their cheerful colors and botanical motifs also make them an ideal choice for a country home, a winter garden, or an elegant dining room.
