Louis XVI Style Kidney-shaped Commode With Cube Marquetry, 19th Century

This elegant French kidney-shaped commode (commode rognon) dates from the late 19th century and was crafted in the Louis XVI style, reflecting the refined neoclassical taste that remained highly popular in French decorative arts during the 19th century.

The structure is made from solid hardwood and veneered in walnut with contrasting fruitwood marquetry, creating a warm and sophisticated tonal contrast. The drawer fronts and side panels are decorated with a remarkable cube marquetry pattern, composed of carefully arranged geometric veneers forming a striking trompe-l’œil three-dimensional effect. This intricate parquetry demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship typical of fine French cabinetmaking.

The commode features two curved drawers that follow the graceful kidney-shaped façade. Each drawer retains its elegant gilt bronze escutcheon, while the uprights are decorated with finely cast gilt bronze mounts in the form of ribbon-tied foliate drops. The lower apron is centered by a delicate laurel and torch motif, a classical ornament closely associated with Louis XVI decorative design. The slender tapered legs are finished with decorative gilt bronze sabots.

The top is fitted with a shaped Languedoc marble slab distinguished by its warm reddish tones and expressive white veining. A delicate pierced brass gallery surrounds the marble top, adding both elegance and protection.

Dating from the late 19th century, this refined commode combines elegant Louis XVI lines, decorative cube marquetry, and finely cast gilt bronze mounts, making it a charming accent piece for a sophisticated interior.
