Important Louis XVI Period Mahogany Snack Table
A very fine Louis XVI period mahogany snack table. This table is distinguished by its unusual proportions—it is larger than average—and by its high quality of craftsmanship. The elegance of this piece is evident in the quality and refinement of the French-polished mahogany, the use of bronze, and the beautiful blue Turquin marble used to line the niche and the tabletop. It rests on four straight, tapered legs ending in casters. The blue Turquin marble top is bordered by a wide bronze band. Note that the interior of the drawer, which opens from the front, is also made of mahogany. On each side of the table, a sturdy bronze handle recalls that an "encas" was a light meal brought to the table. The varnish is original, the marble is in perfect condition, the legs are solid, and an old restoration is visible on one of the uprights.
