Mahogany Screen Coffee Table, Stamped

Artist: Canabas

Screen-style coffee table, made of mahogany and stamped "CANABAS"
Louis XVI period, last quarter of the 18th century.

An elegant and rare salon table in solid mahogany and finely selected mahogany veneer, resting on four tapered turned legs ending in original brass casters.

Rectangular in shape, it features a remarkable veined white marble top set within a molded gallery.
The front opens to reveal two superimposed drawers with molded frames.
The upper drawer is designed as a writing desk or correspondence cabinet with storage compartments, reflecting the functional design characteristic of Canabas’s work.

The piece rests on a low crossbar forming a lower shelf, lending stability and elegance to its silhouette.
The sides are paneled, and the rear is concealed by a folding screen covered in a rich fabric with neoclassical decoration, allowing discreet access to the interior compartment and highlighting the refined and ingenious character of the piece.

The exceptional quality of the mahogany, with its flamboyant grain and warm hue, as well as the simplicity of the decoration, perfectly reflect the style of Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas, a master cabinetmaker who received his certification in 1766 and was renowned for his refined, practical small pieces of furniture, executed with impeccable craftsmanship.
Canabas is today considered one of the most talented creators of mahogany furniture from the Louis XVI period.

In very good condition. Beautiful antique patina. Brass locks, lock plates, pull rings, and casters. Antique marble top. Keys included.
