18th-century Oak Panel Depicting Mary
An oak panel apparently depicting the Virgin Mary bestowing her protection upon children. A powerful symbol is evident between the top and bottom of the panel. Mary, whose imposing stature seems to rise above the devil and the flames of hell. The clouds and sunbeams are also rendered with fairly pronounced relief. The faces are executed in a folk art style. The panel has been treated against wood-boring insects.
