A large fossil tooth of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, one of the largest predatory dinosaurs to have ever existed. Carcharodontosaurus, the "shark-toothed lizard," was a massive theropod that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 94 million years ago, in what is now North America's counterpart, North Africa (primarily Morocco). It was a fearsome contemporary of Spinosaurus and the African equivalent—in terms of its colossal size—to Tyrannosaurus rex, which would roam North America nearly 30 million years later. This tooth, a true hunting weapon, carries the history of a long-lost ecosystem.
