Marketing Kit For The Film Raoni

Original poster and eleven vintage promotional photographs

Film by Jean-Pierre Dutilleux and Clive Kelly
Brazil – Kayapó People – 1978

A rare documentary collection consisting of the original theatrical poster for the film Raoni and eleven original color film photographs taken for its promotion and theatrical release in 1978.

These photographs constituted the official promotional material intended for theater operators, journalists, and media outlets accompanying the film’s release. They feature several iconic scenes from the film: portraits of Chief Raoni Metuktire, scenes of daily life in Kayapó villages, traditional ceremonies, feather headdresses, family scenes, and moments of Amazonian community life.

The collection is completed by the film’s original poster, featuring the now-iconic image of Chief Raoni. This instantly recognizable poster remains one of the most sought-after items related to the history of the documentary and its international distribution.

All photographs are stamped on the reverse with the seal “Les Films Sirand – Lyon,” the company that distributed the film in France. This mark of origin attests to their use in professional film circuits and confirms their status as genuine vintage promotional photographs.

Released in 1978, Raoni achieved exceptional international acclaim. The documentary introduced the world to the personality of Chief Raoni Metuktire and made a lasting contribution to raising public awareness about the preservation of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Its success was notably crowned by an Academy Award nomination and the César Award for Best Documentary Film.

Particularly remarkable, this collection is preserved in an exceptionally pristine condition. While most promotional posters and photographs were used for display, handled, dispersed, or destroyed after their promotional run, the items presented here have been preserved with exceptional care.

Nearly half a century after the film’s release, it has become extremely difficult to assemble such a collection. The combined presence of the original poster and the eleven promotional photographs constitutes a rare testament to the film’s material history and its dissemination to the public in the late 1970s.

Beyond their cinematic interest, these documents represent a major visual record of the Kayapó at a time when the world was discovering, through the eyes of Jean-Pierre Dutilleux and Clive Kelly, one of the great indigenous figures of the 20th century.
