French School, Young Savoyard Musician, 19th Century

Oil painting on canvas depicting a young girl, dressed in simple clothes and with her head covered by a scarf, sitting in an alleyway with a hurdy-gurdy on her lap. The subtle play of light and shadow highlights the features of her face and the expression in her gaze, which is directed toward the top of the composition. On the right, a partially visible man appears to be holding his hat out in front of him. The direction of the young girl’s gaze, combined with the man’s gesture, suggests the presence of a passerby outside the pictorial frame. It is a representation of wandering Savoyard musicians, a recurring theme in genre painting since the 18th century.

A signature, difficult to decipher, is visible at the bottom of the painting.
