Adrien De Boucherville (1829-1883) The King's Bouffon
LE BOUFFON DU ROI
Adrien de Boucherville (1829-1883)
Oil on canvas signed at the bottom, halfway up the left leg of the figure in the background.
Dimensions: 130 x 80 cm.
This composition depicts a genre scene inspired by the 18th century, a recurring theme in Adrien de Boucherville's work. The artist depicts an aristocratic interior animated by several characters, in which the figure of the jester takes center stage. The care taken with costumes, furniture and decorative details testifies to his interest in historical evocations and scenes of worldly life.
The work is presented in its original canvas. A simple surface cleaning was carried out by us to revive the legibility of the colors, without any further restoration intervention.
The work is part of Boucherville's characteristic production devoted to bourgeois and aristocratic interiors, treated in a narrative spirit inherited from 19th-century French genre painting.
About the artist
Adrien de Boucherville (1829-1883) was a French painter specializing in genre scenes, elegant interiors and compositions inspired by the 18th century. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons and at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon between 1864 and 1882. Among the works presented at the Salons were La Vendange (1866), Le Dernier-né and Passe-temps (1879).
His works are today held in several public collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His work illustrates the 19th-century infatuation with historical scenes and evocations of French Ancien Régime society.
