A superb restoration by the Martine Brethes workshop has revealed a wealth of details hidden beneath an oxidized varnish accumulated over 150 years of grime.
A young woman arranges a bouquet of peonies in a room filled with potted plants, hung with Japanese-inspired fabric, and lit by a large skylight overlooking the rooftops.
The contrast between the flesh tones and the dark but not completely opaque background makes this delightful and delicate scene a painting of ineffable charm.
