This striking work immerses the viewer in the excitement of Belle Époque Paris, capturing the energy and movement of the French Cancan dancers at the Moulin Rouge. The expressive linework and white highlights give the scene a remarkable vibrancy.
Maurice-Jean Bourguignon, a contemporary of Toulouse-Lautrec, was influenced by the latter in his depiction of Parisian nightlife. Although less well-known, Bourguignon developed his own style while remaining in the tradition of the Montmartre artists.
Condition: Visible wear. Small perforation of the paper (see photo), light surface wear, and localized cracking on the white highlights, probably related to the use of gouache or thick chalk. Despite these signs of age, the work retains all of its expressive power and period authenticity.
Provenance: Private collection
Medium: Black chalk, dry pastel, and white chalk (or gouache) on brown laid paper
