19th Century Chinese Console

This striking mid-19th century Chinese altar table, dating to around circa 1860, is a richly carved and visually powerful piece, showcasing the craftsmanship and decorative depth associated with traditional Chinese furniture of the period.

The front apron and legs are extensively carved with scrolling foliage, floral motifs and symbolic detailing, all executed with impressive depth and clarity. These carvings retain strong definition and presence, giving the table a sculptural quality that reads beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interior settings.

The top retains its original black lacquered surface, offering a dramatic contrast against the richly coloured red ground beneath. The carved front elements are largely original, while some structural components have been replaced historically, in keeping with age and use. The drawers are later additions and not original to the piece, though they sit comfortably within the form and provide practical storage without detracting from the overall integrity.

The table has clearly been sensitively restored at some point and is presented in fantastic condition, with a strong, stable structure and an excellent surface presence throughout. A superb example of a decorative yet functional altar table, ideal as a statement console, hall table or display piece.
