Portrait Of The Ship Emile-arie - Attributed To The Circle Of Roux (marseille)
A splendid and historic 19th-century ship's portrait depicting the vessel "Émile-Marie", under the command of Captain François de May.
This fine work is attributed to the Atelier des ROUX in Marseille, the most illustrious dynasty of French marine painters and hydrographers, famous for the quasi-scientific precision and poetic beauty of their ship portraits.
Executed with remarkable finesse in pen, ink, watercolor and wash, the composition presents the ship all sails out, splitting a shaped sea with stylized waves under a subtly tinted luminous sky. True to the studio's codes, the lower section is adorned with a textured black band, bearing the title calligraphed in fine gold lettering, titled bottom center.
The work is set off in its original blackened wood frame enhanced with a gilded fillet.
