Copper Holy Oil Box. France, 16th Century
Holy oil box in engraved copper
France, 16th century
Copper holy oil chest consisting of two cylindrical vessels joined under a hinged lid. The lids bear the engraved letters "OP" and "C", Latin abbreviations for the sacred oils kept in each compartment. "C" refers to Chrisma (Sacrum Chrisma), the Holy Chrism used for baptism, confirmation and consecration. "OP" stands for Oleum Presbyterorum (priests' oil) or, according to some ancient usage, Oleum Pro Infirmis (oil for the sick).
.These boxes were intended for storing and transporting the holy oils used by the clergy in administering the sacraments. In particular, they accompanied priests as they traveled among the faithful.
