Royalist Curiosity In The Shadow Of Louis XVI
Seditious shadow object featuring the profile of King Louis XVI.
Popular turned boxwood curiosity dating from the turn of the XVIIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries. This object has the particularity of projecting, under low-angled lighting, a shadow drawing with great clarity the profile of King Louis XVI.
These creations, are part of the troubled context of the French Revolution and the early years of the XIXᵉ century. Described as "seditious objects", they enabled their owners to discreetly display their attachment to the monarchy. Seemingly innocuous, the object reveals its true message only in the light of the sun or a candle, transforming a simple piece of turned wood into a hidden tribute to the fallen sovereign.
