Patinated And Gilt Bronze

Artist: Auguste Moreau

Elegant allegorical clock in patinated bronze enhanced with gilding representing Séléné, goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology. The work is signed Auguste Moreau and bears its original plaque: "Séléné par Aug. Moreau - Récompensé au Salon".

The goddess, draped in antique style, stands gracefully atop a celestial sphere adorned with gilded stars, forming the body of the clock. The treatment of the face, the finesse of the modeling and the movement of the drapery testify to the skill of Auguste Moreau, a renowned French sculptor of the second half of the 19th century.

Mechanical pendulum movement with bell chimes. Presence of signature in bronze and original plate. Nice old original patina.
