Antique Silver Crucifix Hallmarked
Artist: Genova 1762
Antique silver crucifix hallmarked "Torretta Genova 1762," made of wood and gilded bronze, contemporary with the mercury-gilded style. This piece serves as an example of a stylistic variation among the many works of Genoese cabinetmakers, who sought to enrich their pieces with silver inlays. Offering a personal interpretation of the Baroque style. In particular, the Corpus Christi of our cross, finely carved from boxwood, can be stylistically attributed to models derived from the works of Giovan Battista Bissoni (Genoa, 1597–1657), who, together with his father Domenico, ran a thriving sculpture workshop in Genoa that produced numerous works and processional crucifixes.
